Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
