Seven alleged members of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
