A report focused on the usage of AI in British schools found that just 2% of learners aged 13 and 18 said they did not use AI for their studies, while 80% reported they consistently used it.

Negative Effect on Abilities

Despite artificial intelligence's popularity, 62% of the learners said it has had a unfavorable effect on their skills and growth at their educational institution. 25% of the participants concurred that AI “makes it too easy for me to find the answers without doing the work myself”.

Another 12% reported AI “hinders my original thought”, while equivalent percentages stated they were less likely to tackle challenges or compose originally.

Advanced Awareness By Young People

An expert in generative AI noted that the investigation was one of the initial to look at how students in the UK were using artificial intelligence into their education.

“I am particularly impressed by the nuanced understanding displayed,” the specialist said. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”

The results align with research-based investigations on the use of AI in learning. One study measured brain electrical activity while written assignments among students using large language models and found: “These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI’s role in learning.”

Almost 50% of the numerous students questioned said they were anxious their classmates were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for schoolwork without their teachers being able to identify it.

Request for Support and Constructive Aspects

Many participants indicated that they wanted more assistance from educators for the correct usage of artificial intelligence and in evaluating whether its output was reliable. A project aimed at aiding teachers with AI education is being initiated.

“Educators will find certain results particularly noteworthy, especially the extent to which learners anticipate direction from them. Although a technological gap between generations is often assumed, students continue to seek productive AI usage advice from their teachers, which is an encouraging sign.” the specialist said.

A school leader observed: “These insights align with my institutional experience. A great many learners appreciate AI’s potential for original thinking, studying, and resolving difficulties, but tend to utilize it as an expedient rather than a developmental resource.”

Only 31% indicated they didn’t think AI use had a adverse influence on any of their skills. However, most of students stated using AI assisted them gain fresh abilities, such as 18% who said it helped them grasp issues, and 15% who reported it aided them generate “innovative and improved” thoughts.

Student Perspectives

Upon further inquiry, a 15-year-old female student commented: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”
