English Football News: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; City Boss Insists 'Defence Has to Improve'

From the world of English football developments, a significant player was issued a substantial suspension, a manager has pointed to a defender's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive improvements following a wild victory.

1. Mejbri Issued Four-Match Ban and Fine

The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-game ban and a financial fine following misconduct in a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body confirmed the player was referred a separate regulatory commission after allegations of spitting in the direction of away fans around the 67th mark of a 2-0 win by Burnley.

An FA statement explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their top-flight game with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player acted against the laws of football or in an improper way and/or using offensive and/or indecent conduct through spitting towards the area of Leeds United fans.”

The statement added, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the panel imposed a four-game ban and £15,000 after proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for its decisions are to be released in due course.” Burnley, currently 19th in the Premier League table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Prove a Point

The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is no an issue at team, highlighting that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having a bad game during the loss to Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, does not feel that mentality played a part in the poor result. He made his argument by singling out Tosin, the oldest outfield player in the lineup, who produced a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.

“People always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach stated. “After we beat Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced players. I understand that when we don’t win, people are constantly looking for an explanation, but in my view why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we were not good enough.”

Maresca continued, “Who is the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? So, it’s not about his age. It's that those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Get Better'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have learnt from a midweek scare against Fulham with the game has now been forgotten. City held on for a 5-4 victory in a incredible clash on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.

Coming after they resisted a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior game, it raised further doubts about whether they are resilient enough to mount a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he commented. “Good lessons, hopefully. At this level, at all the clubs, one must learn from what happens performances and results and think of what's next.”

“Naturally I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to understand what happened, to not allow so many goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and five by Fulham you can see the two sides, correct? Therefore, we have done plenty of good things. But the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. And attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded is too high. We have to be better.”

Newcastle Focus on Defenders' Deals

Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract discussions involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and is reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to prioritise negotiations with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and the latter’s a year later, Newcastle's efforts are being treated with a certain urgency.

“The initial three or four days after starting is when I discovered that Sandro’s deal was significantly better than the one I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the match against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to remain out for at least a further period.

5. Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton

The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to start when the side face Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.

“It is in the past,” Nuno remarked. “I am confident it will not be repeated because he personally admitted the error. We discussed it internally. I believe the matter is closed and will not happen again.”

He also acknowledged the significant strain on his side, currently in the relegation zone before the weekend fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he said. “It's a reality. We must confront it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino

Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen are fit again. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 due to fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for the opener versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second goal during a 2-0 victory that maintained {their|
