British Extends Methanol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Destinations
The UK government has added 11 further countries to its official warning register regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
The expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Only a few weeks ago, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to a number of serious cases including the fatal death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical often utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Official Guidance for Travelers
Government representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While consuming alcohol abroad, stick to trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.
